Aliens: Thanatos Encounter Overview
Aliens: Thanatos Encounter is a top-down action title for the Game Boy Color that adapts the premise and iconography of the film series. The player controls a Colonial Marine tasked with clearing a massive infested freighter of xenomorph threats.
Gameplay involves navigating through numerous levels with the primary aim of survival and locating an exit, though specific stages impose additional objectives like eliminating all enemies or finding key items. A roster of five marines, each with distinct attributes for speed and health, is available for selection prior to missions. The loss of a marine's health does not result in permanent death but in capture, initiating a timed rescue attempt by another character; failure removes that marine from the available pool.
Combat utilizes an arsenal directly inspired by the films, including pistols, pulse rifles, flamethrowers, and smartguns. A motion tracker can be equipped to detect allies and hostiles, but its use occupies a hand, preventing the simultaneous use of two weapons or heavier armaments. Another equipment option is the power loader, which trades mobility for increased durability.
Opponents encompass the full xenomorph life cycle, from facehuggers to warriors and a queen, with their capabilities expanding to include acid attacks in later stages. Health management is handled via collected first aid kits. The overall structure is challenging, incorporating permanent roster loss and evolving enemy tactics. Progress between sessions is maintained through a password system.
