Superman Returns : Fortress of Solitude Overview
Superman Returns: Fortress of Solitude is a puzzle-focused title for the Game Boy Advance, connected to the 2006 film. Its core structure involves twenty chapters, each presenting a series of crystal-based puzzles that must be solved within an overall time limit. The primary gameplay diverges from typical action-oriented Superman titles, instead centering on two distinct puzzle types played on grids of varying sizes and difficulties.
One puzzle, Kryptonex, is a logic challenge similar to Sudoku where players must deduce the placement of different crystals so that no row, column, or designated group contains duplicates. The other, called Crystallization, requires filling rows and columns with crystals that match by either shape or color to energize and clear them from the board. In both modes, Superman can expend a slowly recharging power meter to gain temporary advantages, such as revealing solutions or manipulating the game timer.
Between puzzle sessions, brief side-scrolling shooter segments interrupt the gameplay. Here, Superman confronts minions sent by villains like Metallo or Brainiac, using specific powers like heat vision or super breath to defeat differently colored enemies. Success in these action sequences yields colored crystals necessary to conclude the chapter.
Progress is measured against the clock, and players may revisit puzzles to improve their completion times, thereby conserving time for later challenges. Finishing a chapter rewards the player with a still image from the associated movie.
