Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 2 is a turn-based strategy RPG where players command a squad of mechs against alien threats. The narrative continues six months after the first game, following the SRX and ATX teams as they confront remnants of the Divine Crusaders and new adversaries, the Einsts and Inspectors.
Combat involves positioning units on a map and selecting actions such as movement and attacks. Pilots can utilize special spirit commands to temporarily boost their mech's performance. When attacked, a unit can choose to counter, evade, or defend. The artificial intelligence controlling enemy forces is noted as being more capable than in the previous title.
Visual presentation shows improvement, with mech attacks animated with greater fluidity. A mechanical addition is the chain attack, which allows a single unit to target multiple enemies simultaneously. The overall aesthetic, from unit designs to special moves, draws clear inspiration from anime conventions.
