Robots Overview
Robots for the Game Boy Advance adapts the film's narrative, casting the player as Rodney Copperbottom on a mission to rescue Robot City from the antagonist Ratchet. The experience blends two-dimensional side-scrolling exploration with three-dimensional visual perspectives across familiar environments such as Big Weld's Mansion and Madame Gasket's Chop Shop.
Core progression involves navigating interconnected maps, using a combination of jumping and combat to overcome obstacles. A central mechanic is an invention mode, which allows for the construction and enhancement of various tools like a scrap gun and a magno grenade. Movement between major areas is facilitated by a transit ball mini-game that mirrors the film's transportation system.
Beyond the primary objective, players can locate missing parts for non-player characters scattered throughout the city. Returning these items provides rewards in the form of power-ups and weapon improvements, encouraging thorough exploration of the maps to uncover secrets. A separate Nintendo DS release introduces features like a player-annotated map, a stylus-controlled 3D transit game, and higher resolution environments with greater detail.
