Hot Wheels : Velocity X Overview
Hot Wheels: Velocity X for the Game Boy Advance is a standalone title, not a port, sharing only its core concept and some characters with its console and PC counterparts. Its narrative centers on the robotic racer Gear Head, who must recover stolen prototype parts and vehicles from the villain MetaCog and his gang bosses across five distinct worlds.
Gameplay is presented from an isometric view and is structured around a primary Story Mode. This mode consists of thirty five missions, seven per world, which culminate in a boss confrontation involving a race and a combat duel. Mission objectives are varied, encompassing standard races, stunt based point challenges, and tasks like locating items, protecting allies, or engaging in vehicular tag with a bomb. Tracks feature automated stunt elements like loops and jumps, and scattered power ups provide weapons, shields, and repairs.
Progress is saved via passwords, and completing Story Mode missions unlocks a roster of thirty distinct cars, each with individual stats for speed, acceleration, traction, and armor. These unlocked cars and levels then become available for separate Race and Challenge modes. Race Mode allows for customizable races on select tracks, while Challenge Mode offers time limited Battle and Tag variants.
Additional features include an unlockable in game database for cars, characters, and items, as well as a connectivity function with the GameCube version to access exclusive vehicles.
