Dora the Explorer: The Search for the Pirate Pig's Treasure is a platformer adapted from the children's television series. The adventure begins when Dora and her monkey Boots, while retrieving a lost ball, encounter Pirate Pig and agree to help him find his missing treasure chest.
The game structure involves navigating a map with eight distinct locations. Each location contains three levels where the player controls Dora, sometimes with Boots, to collect three required stars. While thirty optional coins are also present in every stage, the primary objective is finding the stars. Various helpful items are placed throughout the levels to assist in this task.
Progress is opposed by the character Swiper, who roams the levels attempting to take the player's collected items. This introduces a consistent obstacle across the platforming challenges.
