Star Control II Overview
Star Control II is a hybrid title that blends space exploration, real-time combat, and fleet management within a plot-driven framework. The setting is a galaxy where humanity has been subjugated, following the defeat of an alliance by the Ur-Quan. The player assumes the role of a captain who returns to find Earth enslaved and must build a new coalition to challenge the conquerors.
Gameplay revolves around navigating a two-dimensional starmap, visiting individual star systems to land on planets and interact with alien species. Each civilization has distinct personalities and requires diplomatic engagement through conversation trees or completing specific tasks to secure their alliance. While gathering a large coalition is the broader goal, only a select number of alliances are necessary to finish the main story.
Resource gathering is conducted by deploying a landing module to planetary surfaces to collect raw materials, which function as currency. These materials are used to purchase fuel, hire crew, acquire additional combat ships, and upgrade the capabilities of the primary Precursor vessel. Planetary exploration carries risk, as environmental hazards can damage the landing craft. The player also configures a fleet, with crew members serving as hit points for ships.
Space combat is action-based, viewed from a top-down perspective where planetary gravity affects movement. Players can choose from various ships in their fleet, each with unique abilities, to engage enemies. This combat system can also be accessed as a standalone melee mode. Within the main campaign, an optional cyborg mode allows the computer to resolve battles automatically based on ship statistics.
Freeware, open-source versions of the game, titled The Ur-Quan Masters and Free Stars: The Ur-Quan Masters, exist. These ports combine content from the DOS and 3DO releases and are managed by the original developers, who hold the copyrights to the game's content aside from the Star Control trademark.
