Operation Body Count Overview
Operation Body Count is a first-person shooter set in a near-future scenario where global leaders are held hostage by terrorists in a skyscraper complex. The player assumes the role of a special forces operative tasked with infiltrating the building through its underground maintenance and sewer systems.
Progression through the game's forty levels involves eliminating a set quota of enemies on each floor before advancing. The initial stages take place in sewers populated by hostile creatures, after which the focus shifts to human adversaries within the tower. A small arsenal is available, including a standard shotgun with unlimited ammunition, automatic rifles, and more specialized tools like a flamethrower and a grenade launcher.
Notable technical features for its time included multi-textured floors and ceilings that employed a parallax effect, sometimes causing a visual warping during movement. The game environment was largely destructible; walls could be demolished with explosive weapons, and fire could spread dynamically across surfaces, creating an additional challenging hazard.
A key gameplay system allowed the player to command allied squad members, directing their search patterns or directly assuming control of any living teammate. This mechanic functioned as a form of extra lives, permitting continued play as long as one unit in the group survived.
