Alone in the Dark 3 Overview
The setting is an abandoned western ghost town named Slaughter Gultch, built on ancient sacred ground by a man called Jebediah Stone. After Stone and his private army were killed, the location was left deserted. The story begins when a film crew, led by Emily Hartwood from the first game, arrives to shoot a movie and accidentally awakens the vengeful spirits of the town's former inhabitants.
Players control detective Edward Carnby, who investigates the crew's disappearance. The core gameplay involves navigating static 3D environments where the camera perspective shifts. Interaction is based on collecting and using items to solve puzzles, supplemented by a set of context sensitive actions like opening, moving objects, and fighting. Combat is a significant component, requiring manual aiming with melee weapons or firearms that have limited ammunition.
Carnby confronts reanimated zombie cowboys armed with period appropriate weapons. As he progresses, he uncovers details about Jebediah Stone's past and a broader, sinister plot that threatens the West Coast. The player can adjust the life energy for both Carnby and enemies, which directly influences the combat, making the experience challenging at higher settings.
