Aces of the Deep Overview
Aces of the Deep is a World War II submarine simulation where the player commands a German U-boat. The primary objective involves locating and engaging Allied convoy traffic, which is protected by escort vessels and patrol aircraft, making the task challenging.
Players can engage in lengthy campaigns, beginning at various points in the war, or opt for individual missions with customizable parameters like weather and ship density. Progression through a campaign is marked by receiving promotions and medals, which grant access to more capable submarines. Mission specifics are not fixed; the game dynamically generates convoy encounters based on the historical period and the submarine model in use.
The simulation offers a detailed interior view of the submarine, with different compartments housing specific controls and instruments, such as the engine room's status displays or the captain's logbook. Key interfaces, like the navigational map for plotting courses, are accessible from any location. Certain duties, such as ship recognition, can be delegated to the virtual crew.
A set of ten realism options allows players to adjust the difficulty, toggling features like unlimited ammunition or invulnerability. The CD-ROM release supplements the core game with archival multimedia content, including veteran interviews, tactical manuals, historical documents, photographs, and film footage.
