Star Trek: The Next Generation - Future's Past Overview
Star Trek: The Next Generation - Future's Past is a title that integrates starship command with ground-based exploration. The player assumes the role of the Enterprise crew, responding to a Romulan request to enter the Neutral Zone under the pretext of a missing research team.
Core gameplay cycles between three distinct modes. One involves managing the Enterprise from the bridge, where stations handle navigation, communication, sensor analysis, database access, damage repair, mission briefings, and initiating ship combat or away team transport. Another mode shifts to planetary surfaces, where a selected team of four officers with varied combat, technical, and unique skills must be guided through real-time combat and environmental puzzles. The third primary mode is starship combat, viewed from above, focusing on weapon management, shield monitoring, and evasion.
Mission objectives on planets often require interpreting tricorder data and using found items contextually. During space engagements, a heavily damaged vessel can attempt surrender. Two contemporary console releases exist, with the Genesis version noted for a faster pace in combat, away missions, and ship repairs, alongside distinct visual designs and minor layout variations in exploration areas.
