Montezuma's Return Overview
Montezuma's Return for the Game Boy adapts the core premise of its namesake, casting the player as an adventurer raiding a pyramid for treasure. The objective across its many levels is consistent: collect all treasures and locate the exit, a task made challenging by instant death from enemy contact or significant falls.
While it shares a title with a PC release, this version is more directly a reinterpretation of the original Montezuma's Revenge, featuring a mix of ported and newly designed stages. A notable technical shift brings the camera closer, implementing scrolling levels instead of static single-screen views.
Gameplay heavily emphasizes evasion, as the character lacks a standard attack and must rely on jumping and climbing ladders to avoid foes. Occasionally found daggers provide a limited offensive option. The environment itself presents hazards like conveyor belts, vanishing platforms, teleporters, and doors requiring keys. Temporary power-ups can alter dynamics, allowing the player to pass through enemies or defeat them on touch.
