The Black Onyx Overview
The Black Onyx is a traditional role-playing game where players lead a custom party into a three-dimensional, maze-like dungeon known as the Black Tower. The objective is to locate a fabled artifact within, which is said to bestow eternal youth and happiness.
Gameplay involves navigating this dungeon and engaging in turn-based combat against random monster encounters. The party, which can consist of up to five characters created by the player, can sometimes be expanded by recruiting other adventurers met during the exploration. Its visual presentation is noted for a dark and realistic style.
In terms of its design lineage, it is recognized as one of the earliest Japanese-developed games in its genre, sharing mechanical similarities with foundational Western computer RPGs like Wizardry and Ultima.
