Metal Gear Solid Overview
Metal Gear Solid for the Game Boy Color is a standalone stealth action title, not a port of the contemporary PlayStation release. Its narrative exists in a separate continuity, where a paramilitary group seizes a prototype Metal Gear weapon, prompting the reactivation of agent Solid Snake.
The core experience involves infiltrating enemy facilities from a top-down perspective, where avoiding detection is paramount. Enemy awareness is visualized through vision cones, and players utilize various methods like crawling and hiding to stay concealed. While weapons and explosives can be acquired, direct combat is a secondary and often risky option, making stealth the primary survival tactic.
Progression is facilitated by a range of equipment, including firearms with suppressors, items for concealment like cardboard boxes, and key items such as access cards. Health is managed with rations, and a radio system provides narrative context and guidance from support characters. The main campaign is interspersed with boss fights that demand specific strategies, and the package is supplemented by over one hundred optional training missions focusing on discrete stealth and puzzle challenges.
