Kindaichi Shōnen no Jikenbo: 10-nenme no Shōtaijō is a mystery adventure game adapted from a manga and television series. The player assumes the role of Hajime Kindaichi, a high school student with a talent for solving crimes, similar to other fictional detectives. The gameplay is presented as a visual novel where text is advanced and reviewed, while investigation occurs on a top-down map where various locations can be examined for clues.
The story begins when a student named Akira Kawai receives an anonymous, ominous letter directing him to the Shiomisou inn. Kindaichi and his friend Miyuki Nanase go to investigate the isolated coastal inn, finding only three other guests present. Their arrival coincides with that of detective Kengo Akechi, who is investigating a possible sighting of a killer from a decade-old case.
As a storm approaches, a murder occurs at the inn, creating a tense atmosphere. This event connects the mysterious invitation to the older case, compelling Kindaichi and Akechi to work together to uncover the truth and identify the perpetrator behind the new series of crimes.
