Tony Hawk's Underground Overview
Tony Hawk's Underground for the Game Boy Advance is a skateboarding title that translates its console counterpart to the handheld using an isometric perspective. The experience centers on a story mode where a custom skater begins with limited abilities and progresses by improving stats and learning new tricks through successful performance.
Progression is tied to completing tasks for characters found in each of the ten expansive levels. These objectives, which often involve specific tricks, item collection, or score targets, must usually be done within a time limit. Success grants currency, opens new level areas, and unlocks further content, including professional skaters. A health system is present, where crashes deplete a meter and lead to restarting the level if it empties; protective gear bought in shops can mitigate damage, and food items restore health.
Beyond the story, other modes provide variety. An arcade mode revisits the series' traditional format with two-minute sessions and unique goals for a chosen pro skater. Free skate allows for unlimited practice in unlocked environments. For multiplayer, hot-seat options include HORSE and score competitions, while a link cable is required for a cart racing mode inspired by Jackass.
The control scheme remains consistent with prior handheld entries, but a significant new feature allows the skater to dismount and run on foot. This ability introduces a "run-out" technique to extend combo multipliers. The core loop involves managing risk during timed challenges, as failing a task does not end the attempt, but depleting health from crashes resets the player's position, making the pacing challenging.
