LEGO Star Wars II : The Original Trilogy Overview
LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy adapts the events of the first three Star Wars films into an isometric action game. The core experience involves navigating levels from a start to an endpoint, often requiring the manipulation of switches or levers along the way.
Progression is structured around two distinct modes. Story mode features a fixed party of three characters, allowing the player to switch between them to utilize their unique abilities. A shared health pool of four hearts is depleted at different rates depending on the character being hit. While losing a companion is inconsequential, the death of the player-controlled character results in a penalty to collected studs and a special gauge. Completing the story alone only achieves roughly half of the total completion, as many areas remain inaccessible without specific character skills.
Characters fall into three functional classes. Jedi handle melee combat and can manipulate large objects, blaster users engage at range and assemble smaller structures, and droids are non-combatants essential for opening certain doors. To unlock the full roster of 36 characters for Free Play mode, players must meet multiple criteria per level: accumulating a significant amount of stud currency, finishing the level, and collecting all hidden mini kits. Unlockables extend beyond heroes to include enemies and various cosmetic or gameplay modifiers for purchase.
Combat mechanics were adjusted from the first title to better suit the source material, making blaster fire more rapid and effective while removing a charging function. The game also incorporates vehicle-based flight sequences, such as assaults on the Death Stars or speeder bike chases. The overall challenge is presented as fair, with completion requiring strategic use of a wide character roster across both primary game modes.
