LEGO Racers 2 centers on a galactic racing competition organized by Rocket Racer, who gathers top competitors on Planet Xalax. The primary experience is the Story Game mode, where the player assumes the role of a new racer aiming for the championship title.
Progression is tied to winning races, which rewards the player with both vehicle parts and Golden Blocks. These blocks function as a key resource for unlocking access to the game's four distinct worlds and, ultimately, the final championship event on Xalax. The player begins with no blocks and accumulates them through success, facing challenges from rival racers along the way.
Beyond the single-player campaign, the game includes multiplayer options for up to four players via a link cable. These modes can be configured with or without computer-controlled opponents.
