World Cup Soccer Overview
World Cup Soccer is a DOS title centered on the FIFA tournament, delivered as a package containing two distinct programs and a booklet. One program functions as an informational and quiz tool, providing access to historical results and team performances. Its quiz mode presents multiple-choice questions under a time limit, awarding more points for faster answers and supporting both solo and alternating two-player competition, with performance tracked on a high score table.
The other program is a managerial simulation where the player selects any past World Cup nation and guides it to the final. After assembling a squad, matches proceed with a text-based summary of first-half highlights. Key moments can include penalty kicks, where the player chooses direction for the kick or the goalkeeper's dive, visualized in an isometric perspective to determine the outcome.
The second half incorporates two timed arcade sequences to influence the match score. One is a heading challenge with an isometric view, requiring the player to position a character to direct an incoming ball toward the goal. The other is an overhead shooting game where a boot must strike a bouncing ball into a moving target net, while also preventing the ball from passing into a net behind the boot. The computer then evaluates performance in these sections and adjusts the final goal tally accordingly.
