Bill & Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure is a title for the Nintendo Entertainment System based on the film series. The player takes on the roles of the two protagonists, who must repair disruptions in history after figures are taken from their proper eras.
Gameplay involves alternating control between Bill and Ted. Each uses a payphone to navigate a circuit-based time travel system, where planning an efficient route is necessary as directional changes consume coins. The objective in each period is to locate a misplaced historical person.
Exploration occurs from an isometric perspective, with characters confined to specific paths. Interaction with the environment includes collecting coins, jail keys, and items to divert pursuers. While some non-player characters provide assistance, others will impose a coin penalty or attempt to capture the player, resulting in a jail scenario that requires a key to escape.
To complete a mission, the player must first find an object that will attract the target historical figure. After successfully retrieving one figure, control switches to the other character to begin a new search. This cycle continues until all temporal anomalies are resolved.
