Pokemon Blue Version is a role playing game where players explore a top down world, capture creatures, and engage in turn based combat. The player's journey takes place across the Kanto region, starting from Pallet Town with the objective of completing a catalog of all Pokemon species.

Progression is tied to defeating a series of eight Gym Leaders to earn badges, which in turn grant access to new areas and special abilities for overworld navigation. The adventure involves navigating caves and routes, solving simple environmental puzzles, and confronting a criminal syndicate known as Team Rocket. The final challenge requires building a team capable of overcoming the Elite Four to become the Pokemon League Champion.

Gameplay revolves around capturing wild Pokemon with items called Poké Balls and training a party of up to six. Battles use a system of elemental types, hit points, and a limited set of moves per creature. Defeated Pokemon can be restored at designated centers or with items, while victorious battles provide experience for leveling up and evolution. The overall difficulty can be considered fair, with a clear sequence of objectives.

A defining feature is the roster of 151 creatures, with some species exclusive to this version. Completing the collection necessitates trading with owners of the paired Pokemon Red Version via a link cable, making player interaction a core design element despite the single player focus. This international release incorporated graphical and technical revisions from a later Japanese version, resulting in adjusted monster encounters and modified dungeon designs.
