V-Rally 3 Overview
V-Rally 3 is a handheld adaptation for the Game Boy Advance, featuring its own graphics engine and content. The experience is built around two primary modes: a rally championship and a circuit racing mode.
In the main V-Rally Mode, players compete across seven countries, each with distinct stages raced in pairs. Between these pairs, car setup can be adjusted for tires, suspension, steering, brakes, and gearbox, while also allowing for repairs. Collisions cause specific damage to car components, and any repairs not completed in the allotted time must be endured for the remainder of the event. The game contains ten licensed cars, most of which are locked initially. Unlocking more powerful vehicles increases the challenge, as required times to beat the competition become stricter.
The secondary V-Rally Cross mode provides circuit racing on five tracks, unlocked progressively. Races involve three opponents over two three-lap rounds, one forward and one in reverse. Performance in the first round builds a boost meter for use in the second. Additional options include a Time Trial mode using unlocked content and two-player link cable multiplayer for V-Rally Cross and Time Trial.
Visually, the game uses a texture-mapped 3D engine for tracks, with 2D bitmaps for scenery, backgrounds, and cars. Environmental effects like rain, snow, fog, and night are present. Two camera perspectives are offered: a default behind-car view and a first-person cockpit view that shows steering animations and windshield damage, though this cockpit view is not available in the V-Rally Cross mode.
