Need for Speed : Underground Overview
Need for Speed: Underground on Game Boy Advance is a polygonal racing game that adapts its console counterpart's street racing theme for handheld hardware. Its primary campaign, Underground Mode, tasks the player with climbing from the bottom to the top of a street racing hierarchy. Progression is achieved by winning races to earn credits and improve rank, which in turn unlocks new vehicles and parts.
The racing itself is structured around four distinct event types, each with its own set of tracks. Circuit races involve completing laps while navigating traffic, while Sprint races are point-to-point contests. Drag racing focuses on straight-line speed and precise manual gear shifts, and Drift events score players for controlled slides. The campaign requires winning over sixty of these events across normal and reversed track layouts to complete.
Vehicle customization is a significant component, with fourteen cars available. Players can purchase both performance upgrades, like engines and tires, and purely cosmetic visual modifications such as paint jobs and rims. A Quick Race option allows for instant play with unlocked content, and multiplayer is supported via link cable.
