Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses Overview
Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses for the Game Boy Advance is a 2D side-scrolling platformer. Its narrative is adapted from the 2006 animated film, which itself draws loosely from the fairy tale of the same name, casting Barbie as the princess Genevieve. The plot involves her father's poisoning and the imprisonment of her sisters by their strict guardian, Duchess Rowena, setting the stage for Genevieve's quest.
Progression is tied to rescuing the other princesses, which in turn unlocks new tools for navigation and combat. These abilities, such as a butterfly net for defense and magical ribbons for creating pathways, allow access to more complex environmental puzzles. The gameplay evolves from a fair starting point to incorporate challenges like navigating parallel planes. Health is managed via a three-heart system, and the adventure includes confrontations with boss characters.
Beyond the main platforming, the experience includes several mini-games, such as fixed-scrolling sequences with a cat companion and timed racing events. These optional activities, along with two selectable difficulty levels, are accessible directly from the main menu once unlocked. The game supports continuation via a password system. A separate Nintendo DS version features unique controls, including the use of the microphone and a touch screen interface for managing abilities.
