Star Defender Overview
Star Defender was one of those games you'd find on a Flash portal in the early 2000s. It fit right in with the era's simple, direct shooters. You loaded it in a browser, and it just worked, no fuss. I remember playing it during breaks, the screen a small rectangle of action amidst everything else.
You control a lone ship at the bottom of the screen. Your job is to hold the line against waves of alien craft that descend from the top. You move the ship with your mouse, sliding it left and right to track targets. The primary action is clicking to fire a steady stream of laser bolts. You also collect power-ups that drop from certain enemies; these can upgrade your weapon to a wider spread or grant temporary shields. The main objective is straightforward: survive as long as you can, clearing each wave before the next one arrives. The pacing is steady, with the difficulty ramping up as enemy formations become denser and their fire more persistent. It feels like a constant, focused dance of evasion and precise shooting.
