Reaping the Dungeon Overview
Reaping the Dungeon is a turn based dungeon crawler with randomized levels, drawing inspiration from titles like Rogue. Its setting places the player beneath the surface of Jupiter, tasked with stopping a malfunctioning machine that is generating synthetic creatures. Progression involves descending through dungeon levels, which are different each time, with one new enemy and map feature introduced per floor.
The core loop revolves around exploration and combat, where encounters are resolved through simple hit exchanges. Defeated foes yield raw crystals used to enhance character attributes, such as damage output or movement speed. Treasure collected in the form of gems and metals can be sold in shops to acquire better gear, making the character more capable over time.
Several original mechanics define the experience. A constantly moving exit shaft must be located and marked using data chips found in the level, making navigation a persistent puzzle. Character management is complicated by an oxygen meter that depletes with every step, discouraging aimless wandering. Resources like health, energy, and oxygen can be replenished from cell plants, but harvesting them requires precise timing within their growth cycle.
Special abilities are granted by consuming rare mushrooms, providing temporary powers like wall phasing or enhanced vision. The game is split into two parts: a free initial episode and a larger paid sequel. Visually, it uses a customized 16 color ASCII character set, with audio provided by PC Speaker sounds.
