Aleshar: The World of Ice Overview
Aleshar: The World of Ice is a role-playing game presented from a top-down perspective, set in a frigid, snow-covered world. The narrative premise involves a protagonist born with innate elemental abilities, which are considered illegal and dangerous unless sanctioned by the ruling Cult of Wisdom. To avoid persecution, the character is sent to train with a reclusive elementalist, setting the stage for their eventual return.
Gameplay unfolds across two primary modes: an overland map and a tactical map. The overland map uses real-time movement, where random monster encounters can happen even when stationary, and features tools for hunting and navigation. Upon entering settlements or initiating combat, the view switches to a tactical map. Here, interactions with non-player characters are conducted through a text parser that recognizes specific keywords, while combat is turn-based, resolved through movement or manual aiming followed by descriptive text outcomes.
Character progression departs from conventional RPG systems. There are no experience points or discrete levels; instead, a character's statistics and capabilities improve organically through frequent use of related skills during play. Players begin by selecting from several classes, such as hunter or bard, each with customizable starting attributes.
Magic, referred to as Spark, becomes accessible later in the adventure. It is governed by five elemental runes that can be used singly or in combination. Spellcasting involves selecting a power level, where greater effects come at the cost of increased character fatigue. The nature of a spell's effect is determined by its target: beneficial for allies or damaging for foes.
