Magic Sword Overview
Magic Sword was one of those games you'd find buried in a Flash portal, a straightforward sidescroller from that era of simple browser gaming. You control a lone warrior, armed with a sword, moving through a dark fantasy tower. The goal is clear from the start: climb to the top and defeat the evil waiting there. It didn't have elaborate cutscenes or a deep story; it was just you, your blade, and a lot of monsters in your way.
You move left and right, with a dedicated button for your basic slash attack. The real depth, such as it was, came from remembering specific button combinations for different moves, like upward thrusts or spinning attacks. Along the way, you could free prisoners from cells, who would then follow you and fight by your side for a short time. The game moved at a brisk pace, throwing enemies at you constantly, and the difficulty could feel punishing if you missed a jump or mistimed a block. It felt like a relentless, claustrophobic climb where every floor cleared was a small victory.
